APRIL WINERY OF THE MONTH: HAHN FAMILY WINES
During the 1790s, Spanish missionaries recognized the rare soils and favorable climate of the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey and planted grapevines there. Yet nearly two hundred years later when our founder Nicolaus (Nicky) Hahn and his wife Gaby first purchased land in the Highlands, cattle, sheep and horses ranged over the hills. Vineyards were a secondary concern.
Nicky immediately saw that the land he’d purchased was destined for greater things than grazing stock. He wasted no time. In 1980, the Hahns released their first wine from SLH. A mere eight years later, Nicky led the charge to establish SLH as an American Viticultural Area, a dream he saw realized in 1991.
Today, Hahn Family Wines, now run by Nicky and Gaby’s son Philip, owns and sustainably farms 650 acres of estate vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands. SLH enjoys worldwide acclaim for the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay made there.
Hahn Cabernet Sauvignon
Inviting red cherry and currant jam aromatics complement notes of vanilla and caramel.
Hahn Pinot Noir
This wine’s bouquet charms with scents of bright cherry, red fruit and cedar with slightly toasty notes. On the palate, round soft tannins with a mouth full of cherry flavors, finishing with mellow acidity.
Inspired by the Rhône blends of Southern France, our GSM combines the character of each component into rich layers of flavors and textures.
This Merlot displays aromas of ripe plum, rich cocoa, blueberry, and violet with hints of juicy black cherry.
Tropical aromas of banana, lemongrass, citrus and orange zest. Bright acidity with viscous, luscious mouth-feel contributes to the wine’s clean finish.
Hahn Winery Pinot Gris
Freshly squeezed Oro Blanco grapefruit juice shows on the nose of this bottling, along with touches of tangerine and lemon-lime soda. The grapefruit character extends to the clean, bright and pithy palate, making for a very refreshing experience.
2016 Hahn SLH Pinot Noir
Hahn SLH Pinot Noir has aromas of bright cherry, hints of earth, mushroom, and toasty oak. Concentrated flavors of red fruit and spice.
2016 Hahn SLH Chardonnay
Hahn SLH Chardonnay has crisp aromas of honeysuckle, vanilla, hints of citrus and banana. Full bodied flavors with viscous, round mouth-feel of citrus balances the acidic finish.
2016 Smith & Hook Cabernet Sauvignon
A bouquet bursting with notes of mocha, coffee, toasted oak, vanilla, black currant, and licorice. Expansive flavors and the round viscous mouthfeel backed with concentrated tannic structure carry through to the smooth, lavish finish.
2014 Smith & Hook Proprietary Red Blend
Opulent aromas of blackberry and cherry, accompanied by vanilla and toasted oak. The refined yet robust palate is full bodied, lush and structured with layers of black fruit and toasted oak.
2014 Lucienne Pinot Noir Smith Vineyard
Baked black cherry, rare roast beef and light sage aromas show on the dynamic, earthy nose of this bottling by Winemaker Paul Clifton. Garrigue is prominent on the tip of the sip, with strong but not overripe black cherry and plum flavors. These lead into forest floor, juniper, pine needle and mulling spice on the finish.
